Long-acting reversible contraception

Long-acting reversible methods of contraception are methods that offer protection against pregnancy for a number of years.

Despite their long-term nature, they are also suitable for women who wish to delay pregnancy for one to two years.

Many women prefer the convenience of these methods rather than needing to remember to take a pill every day, or having to get an injection every month.

At Marie Stopes Vietnam, we offer some most popular long-acting reversible methods of contraception, including:

Contraceptive Implant

The implant is a small plastic rod or capsule, about the size of a matchstick, that releases the hormone progestin. It is a very effective type of contraception (>99.9%).

A specially trained provider performs a minor surgical procedure to place the implant under the skin on the inside of a woman’s arm.

The implant keeps a woman’s progestin levels artificially stable and prevents the body from preparing itself for pregnancy. Once in place, it prevents pregnancy for three to five years.

The ingredients in the contraceptive implant include the hormone levonorgestrel or etonogestrel.

The procedure of inserting the implant only takes a few minutes and it will be effective after 24 hours. Once the implant was inserted, there’s no need to use another contraception.

Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD) – Mirena

The Mirena hormonal IUD is a small flexible plastic device that is inserted into the uterus. It prevents pregnancy by gradually releasing a progestogen hormone directly into the uterus, which thickens the mucus at the cervix so that sperm cannot get through to meet an egg.

By delivering a small amount of progestogen directly to the uterus, it changes the lining of the womb, preventing an egg from implanting.

The Mirena hormonal IUD is a very effective type of contraception (over 99% effective) and can last for up to five years. Because they are a ‘set-and-forget’ method, there is no difference between typical and perfect use.

Mirena can be used whether or not you have had a child. Mirena also treats heavy periods in women who choose intrauterine contraception.

Mirena IUD side effects are uncommon but may include acne, headaches, moodiness and weight gain.

If present, these are usually mild and often settle down after the first few months.

Copper IUD

The copper intrauterine device (IUD) is a small copper-coated device that is inserted into a woman’s uterus through her vagina and cervix by a specially trained healthcare provider.

Once in place, the copper IUD can prevent pregnancy for 8 to 10 years.

Like the hormonal IUD, the copper IUD is an effective long-acting method of contraception. At Marie Stopes Vietnam we recommend these types of contraception as they have been shown to be over 99% effective when used correctly.

The copper IUD can offer numerous advantages when used correctly, including:

  • Easily inserted by a trained Marie Stopes Vietnam provider
  • Effective immediately
  • Very effective up to 10 years
  • Can be easily removed at any time
  • Once in place, you do not need to think about it or do anything until it needs replacing
  • Your previous fertility will return immediately after it’s removed
  • It can be fitted directly after childbirth (or after an abortion) and works immediately
  • It does not interrupt sex.

Which method of contraception is right for me?

Marie Stopes Vietnam provides quality and confidential counseling services through phone of at our clinics.

Counselling is the process of talking through your worries with a qualified professional. It is a form of talking therapy that lets you discuss your feelings in a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

It is sometimes easier to talk to a trained professional rather than a family member or friend, as they are not personally involved with your situation and will always have a non-judgemental attitude.
