Surgical abortion

Before your procedure, you will have a consultation with a Marie Stopes International nurse and doctor who will explain the surgical abortion process to you and conduct an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy and gestation. You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need.
The procedure uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus and is usually performed with local anesthetic.
If required, additional health screenings such as a Pap smear or sexually transmitted infection (STI) check can be provided during your procedure.
After the procedure, you will spend some time resting in a comfortable recliner in our recovery room before being discharged.

Medical abortion

Medical abortion is a safe way to terminate an early pregnancy using medication instead of surgery. You will need to attend a Marie Stopes International clinic at least twice.
You will have a consultation with a Marie Stopes International nurse and doctor who will explain the process of medical abortion to you in full along with any side-effects you can experience from the medications. An ultrasound will be conducted to confirm your pregnancy and gestation. You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need.
At any stage before commencing treatment, you can decide to not proceed or to choose a surgical abortion instead.
During the consultation with the doctor you will take the first tablet. You will then need to take the second medication at home 36-48 hours later. Usually within 4 hours of taking the second medication you will experience vaginal bleeding, cramps and you will pass some pregnancy tissue. You will need to come back to the Marie Stopes International clinic two weeks after for a final assessment and to ensure the abortion is complete. This is very important.
If required, additional health screenings such as a Pap smear or sexually transmitted infection (STI) check can be provided during your procedure.
